Prohibition on Music is Clear

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Luqmaan 31:6]

Do you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur’aan)? And you laugh at it and weep not, Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”[al-Najm 53:59-61]

“Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91).

Narrated Abu ‘Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari that he heard the Prophet saying, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful. And (from them), there will be some who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’ Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and Allah will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection.”

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas’ud: Salam ibn Miskin, quoting an old man who witnessed AbuWa’il in a wedding feast, said: They began to play, amuse and sing. He united the support of his hand round his knees that were drawn up, and said: I heard Abdullah (ibn Mas’ud) say: I heard the apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) say: singing produces hypocrisy in the heart. (Book #41, Hadith #4909)

i don’t know if you would dare to publish my comment, but just my note..

….who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead….

Tell me who gave the authprity for the translator to inject his view in between paranthesis.Quran doesn’t say that idle talk is music, but the translator does..I hope he burns in hell for corrupting Quran according to him whims and likes…

    • Among the entertainments which may comfort the soul, please the heart, and refresh the ear is singing. Islam permits singing under the condition that it not be in any way obscene or harmful to Islamic morals. There is no harm in its being accompanied by music which is not exciting.

In order to create an atmosphere of joy and happiness, singing is recommended on festive occasions such as the days of ‘Eid, weddings and wedding feasts, births, ‘aqiqat (the celebration of the birth of a baby by the slaughter of sheep), and on the return of a traveler.

‘Aishah narrated that when a woman was married to an Ansari man, the Prophet(peace be on him) said, ” ‘Aishah, did they have any entertainment? The Ansarare fond of entertainment.” (Reported by al-Bukhari.)

Ibn ‘Abbas said, ” ‘Aishah gave a girl relative of hers in marriage to a man of theAnsar. The Prophet (peace be on him) came and asked, ‘Did you send a singeralong with her?’ ‘No,’ said ‘Aishah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) then said, The Ansar are a people who love poetry. You should have sent along someone who would sing, ‘Here we come, to you we come, greet us as we greet you.’ ” (Reported by Ibn Majah.)

‘Aishah narrated that during the days of Mina, on the day of ‘Eid al-Adha, twogirls were with her, singing and playing on a hand drum. The Prophet (peacebe on him) was present, listening to them with his head under a shawl. Abu Bakr then entered and scolded the girls. The Prophet (peace be on him), uncovering his face, told him, “Let them be, Abu Bakr. These are the days of ‘Eid.” (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

Islam allows the act of listening to music or singing provided the following conditions are met:
    * It does not involve a theme that promotes immorality, indecency, or evil.
    * It is not accompanied with haram practices.
    * It does not incite evil desires within oneself.
    * It does not waste one’s time.
    * It does not lead to neglecting one’s duties.

It was narrated that `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) attended a wedding of one of her female relatives from the Ansar (Muslims of Madinah), and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be on him) asked her, “Have you sent a girl with her [the bride] who can sing and beat the duff [tambourine]?” `A’ishah then said, “What would she say?” The Prophet said, “She can say, ‘Here we come; to you we come; greet us as we greet you” (Al-Shawkani, Nayl Al-Awtar).

The religious texts that stand as a basis for those who maintain that singing is haram are either ambiguous or inauthentic. None of the hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is valid as evidence on the judgment of prohibition. Moreover, all these hadiths are declared ‘weak’ by the followers of Ibn Hazm, Malik, Ibn Hanbal, and Ash-Shafi`i.

In his book, Al-Ahkam, Al-Qadi Abu Bakr Ibn Al-`Arabi says, “None of the hadiths maintaining that singing is prohibited are considered authentic (by the scholars of the Science of Hadith Methodology).” The same view is maintained by Al-Ghazali and Ibn An-Nahwi in Al-`Umdah. Ibn Tahir says, “Not even a single letter from all these Hadiths was proved to be authentic.”

Ibn Hazm says, “All the hadiths narrated in this respect were invented and falsified.”

You neeedn’t publish my comment if you have weak faith..

Give an example of a music/song which meets your five stars(criterias) and people call it music and not qirat.

I dont find your comment very polite firstly. But I published it simply to reply to the fact that you, yourself are not providing any valid refutation for these hadith or interpretation of the Quran. That interpretation is Dr. Mohsin, you can compare the translations here:

    http://www.quranexplorer.com

And unless you are an Arabic scholar I hardly think you have the education to say differently. Unless we can read Quran and interpret it based on high level of Islamic knowledge, a translation is all we have.

Secondly, the prohibition on music is clear, all the madhabs have agreed on that. You can read the article posted at the end.

I would think that a true believer would ask for forgiveness if he/she believed another Muslim made error, not say he should burn in hell. That just proves to me your intentions of your comment in the first place.

And finally, it is agreed that women can sing amongst other women at weddings or at eid, and use the duff provided the words are beneficial. But that is not the interpretation of music and in fact all other musical instruments as far as I have ever heard are haram as is women singing to men. IN general this is widely accepted and easily understood in Islam.

You need not reply and keep arguing, I dont really have time for ppl who are biased in their opinions and aggressive in their presentation.

    salamualaikum

I’d like to address Nimmy’s comment:

“….who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead….

For your kind information, it was Ibn Mas’oud [RA] who swore by Allah three times that that ayah was referring explicitly to music. And in case you are unaware of his status as a mufassir, he was one of the foremost experts on the Qur’an, even moreso than Ibn Abbas [RA]. He grew up as a child in the house of Prophet Muhammad [saws] and in his later years, he was the only one who could claim that he knew where each and every single ayah was revealed, why it was revealed, for whom, in short, all the asbaab0un-nuzool [conditions of revelation] of every single verso of the Qur’an.

So please, be careful and don’t throw around statements like “I hope he burns in hell” because you may unknowingly end up cursing the Sahabah, and according to the classical scholars, doing that takes you out of Islam.
